Miraculous Birth of the Forerunner
John’s birth was heralded by the angel Gabriel to the elderly priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth. Fulfilling the closing prophecies of Malachi, John was destined to go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn hearts back to God. Filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb, he grew up in the solitude of the Judean wilderness.
The Voice in the Wilderness
Clothed in camel's hair with a leather belt, John emerged on the banks of the Jordan River proclaiming: 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near' (Matthew 3:2). Throngs of people came from across Judea confessing their sins and receiving baptism. John boldly declared that One greater than he was coming whose sandals he was not worthy to untie.
'Behold the Lamb of God' and Ultimate Martyrdom
When Jesus approached the waters, John rejoiced, proclaiming: 'Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!' (John 1:29). After baptizing the Lord, John gladly directed his own disciples to follow Jesus, stating: 'He must increase, but I must decrease'. Imprisoned and martyred by Herod Antipas for fearlessly defending God's moral law, Jesus declared John the greatest of all prophets.
