Detailed Biography & History
Born of a Mother's Prayer
Samuel was born in response to the tearful prayers of Hannah, who promised to dedicate her child to the Lord if blessed with a son. True to her word, she brought young Samuel to Shiloh to serve under Eli the high priest. In an era when the word of the Lord was rare, young Samuel grew faithfully in the presence of God.
'Speak, for Your Servant Is Listening'
One quiet night in the Tabernacle, God called Samuel by name. Guided by Eli, the boy responded: 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening' (1 Samuel 3:10). God gave him a solemn prophetic message, and all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized Samuel as a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.
From Judges to Monarchy
Serving as Israel's last judge and chief prophet, Samuel summoned the nation to repentance, defeating the Philistines and erecting the memorial stone Ebenezer ('Thus far the Lord has helped us'). When Israel demanded a human king, Samuel anointed Saul, and later, following Saul’s rebellion, traveled to Bethlehem to anoint young David as God’s chosen shepherd-king.
