Bethel and the Stairway to Heaven
Jacob was born the twin brother of Esau to Isaac and Rebekah. Though his early life was marked by scheming to secure the birthright, God began a deep work of transformation. Fleeing to Haran, Jacob rested his head on a stone at Bethel and beheld a stairway reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending, where God renewed the Abrahamic covenant.
Labor in Haran and the Night at Peniel
In Haran, Jacob served his uncle Laban for twenty years, working fourteen of them out of devoted love for Rachel. As he returned to the Promised Land, trembling at the thought of meeting Esau, Jacob encountered the angel of the Lord at the Jabbok river. Wrestling until dawn, Jacob held fast: 'I will not let you go unless you bless me'.
Renamed Israel: Father of Twelve Tribes
God bestowed upon him a new name and identity: 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome' (Genesis 32:28). Reconciled with Esau, Israel spent his twilight years reunited with his beloved son Joseph in Egypt, pronouncing inspired blessings over his twelve sons who formed the tribes of God’s chosen nation.
