An Unconventional Miracle

In Mark 8:22-26, we encounter one of the most puzzling miracles in the Gospels. Jesus leads a blind man outside the village, spits on his eyes, and lays his hands on him. Why would the Son of God use such an unconventional method? To understand this, we must look past our modern cultural lens.

In the ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish worlds, saliva was sometimes believed to have medicinal or restorative properties. While we view it as unsanitary today, for the people of that time, it was a tangible, intimate symbol of life-force and healing. By using his own saliva, Jesus was engaging with the man in a way that was culturally recognizable, yet deeply personal.

Furthermore, this healing was unique because it happened in two stages. After the first touch, the man saw people looking like walking trees. Jesus touched him again, and his sight was fully restored. Many scholars, as discussed in biblical commentaries, suggest this gradual healing was intentional.
