Watchful Servants: Readiness Without Panic
Lamps lit: a posture, not a schedule
In Luke 12:35–40, Jesus tells his disciples to “be dressed for action and have your lamps lit.” He speaks of servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding feast. The surprising promise is that the master, finding them awake, will serve them. Readiness, in Jesus’ teaching, is not paranoia; it is attentive love.
Why watchfulness matters
Many people hear “be ready” and feel anxiety. But Jesus’ point is the opposite: living ready frees you from anxiety because you stop pretending you control time. Watchfulness is a spiritual alertness: living with integrity, making peace quickly, keeping promises, and refusing to let love be postponed forever.
Modern sleepiness
We live surrounded by distraction. It is easy to sleep spiritually—not by closing our eyes, but by drifting through life without reflection. Watchfulness means noticing: where is God calling me today? Who needs my attention? What do I need to repent of? A lamp stays lit through small daily choices.
A simple rule
- Daily examen: five minutes at night to review the day with God.
- Quick reconciliation: don’t let resentment become your new normal.
- One act of mercy: keep the lamp fueled by love.
Good news
Jesus does not call us to fear the future. He calls us to live awake. And the promise is beautiful: the Master is not coming to crush his servants but to bless them. Readiness is not about earning love; it is about being available to receive it.
